PUNCH (Jon Bonné)
Point Ormond Sauvignon Blanc 2017 – 20 under $20 wines for summer
I acknowledge that a set of people exist who seek nothing more than a good sauvignon blanc. I also acknowledge that recommending one—along with recommending any inexpensiveAustralian wine—comes with a lot of baggage. But the negociant-like Point Ormond outfit finesses it all, with this bottle from far southwest Australia. It’s more kaffir lime than the usual grassiness, and the pale color doesn’t quite give away how much energy and tang there is. A sign of hope for legit Oz drinkability.

Point Ormond Sangiovese 2015 – 92 points / Best Buy
This wine is spot on with the modern Aussie movement towards light-bodied, moderate-alcohol wines, with little to no oak influence. From the cool climes of Western Victoria, this is downright delicious and a total bargain. Bright, ripe red cherry, chocolate, cola and violet notes lead into a plush yet zingy palate of juicy red fruits, silky soft tannins and a long tangy finish. Little Peacock Imports. Best Buy. —C.P.
